Wiping Formatting Reinstalling

You might think computers are all alike, but you'd be wrong. When it comes to wiping all the data off them after being donated to us and then reinstalling Windows each seems to come up with its own set of demands. For instance, when working on a Compaq Presario with a photo card reader Windows renamed all the drives based on each input of the reader. This resulted in the hard drive being called drive i and one of the card slots being called C. Drivers for various devices used by the computer come zipped with installation predetermined to be on drive C. No way to change it that I know of. Directions to change the drive name aren't too difficult, except after trying the procedure as posted by Windows help, this Compaq's version of the newly installed Windows will not allow names to be changed. Again, no way to change it that I know of.

Obviously this process is not my forté! I am very, very grateful to a loyal volunteer who does most of this work for E-quip Africa! This last week I brought home 4 computers to "refurbish" and every one was a bust. Twenty hours of attempting something which should be simple went down the drain!

I'm going back to the Compaq now--Killdisk should be done writing zeroes over all data for the 15th time by now so I can try installing Windows XP with the card reader in the trash can!
